Estimate: 230M Chinese Online Gamers in 2012

December 9, 2009

Growing Internet penetration in China will continue to fuel online gaming revenues as well as swell the number of online gamers in the years to come according to a new report.

Analysys International data, as reported by Reuters, claims that online gaming revenues in China should reach approximately 73.1 billion yuan (approximately $10.7 billion U.S.) within three years, while the online gaming population is expected to grow from the current 69.0 million to 230.0 million over the same period.

Internet availability has only reached about 27.0 percent of the Chinese population currently, versus more than 70.0 percent in South Korea and Japan. Current U.S. penetration is estimated at 74.1%.

Online game revenues are expected to tally about 26.0 billion yuan (approximately $3.8 billion U.S.) this year.

Well as a Asian-Americans.  I'm not really suprised by this.  Video game is greatly love in Asia.

-In Xian, China.  As one of the largest educational centres in China, with a huge number of undergraduate students, online games are very popular in the area. Xi'an has already hosted worldwide game competitions such as ACON5, CEG2006, and WCG2006.

-In South Korea, 90% of home have broadband internet access.  South Korea is the most wired place on earth.  So It's not a suprise that there are a lot of people who played video game. Remember this GP article: http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/05/27/frontline-looks-video-game-addiction-south-korea

-In Japan, well you get the idea.

-In a lot part of Asia, I think they are more gamers then USA and Europe combined.  Remember, China has the biggest population, South Korea is wired, and Japanese gaming industry is big as Western one.  So combine this and you have one big gaming society in the far East.

I have also heard from somewhere, that WOW users do not like gold farmers from China. Aka "farming for gold." So yeah I can believe that as well & learning from my AI instructor that South Korea is the most wired place on earth. Which is awesome, btw.

"Growing Internet penetration" Those 3 words should never be in the same sentence. Just saying.

Re: Estimate: 230M Chinese Online Gamers in 2012

Well we shall see if it does end. But it is also believed that the Myans calendar ended on the year 2012. When my fiance was in the Marines, the DI's drilled it into his head that the world would end in 2012. He asked me if I believed it? I said I don't know. I would love to see the movie though. :)

Heh, not if the Chinese government can help it I bet.

Re: Estimate: 230M Chinese Online Gamers in 2012

Then they will be offline again when the Chinese government feels that the people love games more than the government itself.  The Chinese government has always come across to me like one of those guys who beat the tar out of their girlfriends if they talk to any other male ever.
