Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web Censorship

Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web Censorship

December 17, 2009

While most viewed the Australian government’s decision to accept public comments on adding an adult R18+ rating category for videogames as a positive step forward, one columnist labeled the announcement as “purely smoke and mirrors.”

Duncan Riley of The Inquisitr called the government’s timing for the release of the paper suspect, claiming that it was merely a way to distract Australians from the government’s new plan to censor the Internet, which was announced just a few days later.

Other hurdles to the eventual implementation include the fact that any change to current censorship laws must be supported by all states. Riley adds:

States could in theory still go it alone on censorship, but likewise none seems interested in going it alone on computer games; that is, the states are committed to the process of a national implementation of censorship laws, complete with the need for all states to agree to changes.

Another road block is, of course, South Australia Attorney General Michael Atkinson:

Atkinson isn’t a one-man band on censorship, his stance against R18+ games is not his alone, but comes with the support of the South Australian Government. If he was running policy that went against the beliefs of the Government, he wouldn’t continue to hold his position of Attorney General.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

In practice, are there any actual practical applications of censorship?

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Yes.  You are not allowed to shout "Fire!" in a crowded area (excepting, of course, that there is an actual fire).  This is technically censorship, but in a good way.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Fun Fact: The "Fire in a theater" argument was originally used to jail anti-war activists during WWI.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Through the lens of Conservatism, it protects the people from immorality and justifies the Religious State.

Through the lens of Liberalism, it protects the people from themselves and justifies the Authoritarian state.

Hence, there are plenty of people who see censorship as practical and necessary.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

For a sufficiently American value of "liberal".

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Hugo Chavez says "hi".

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

That's exactly what I meant, because of those two big words, "conservative" or "liberal", Hugo Chavez is neither.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

I love the picture.  Very clever.

Poor Aussies.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Interesting theroy, the timing does seem alittle odd.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

A little odd? Thats like saying a squashed skunk is "a little smelly".

And I thought the timing was a BIT to coincedental for their own good. I just figured I'd not be the only one who could detect the aroma of the obvious.

I wouldnt put it passed them to do this

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Hmm... I'm not sure how a relatively small issue is supposed to distract us from a distinctly outstanding one. I'd be willing to bet many more Austalians are aware of Internet censorship over game classifications, and those interested in the latter still very much have the former on their minds. Both are important issues regarding censorship, free speech and the freedom of expression, but in the scheme of things game ratings are just a drop in the ocean by comparison. Internet consorship affects everyone in the short term.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Two thumbs up for a columnist who got it half wrong!

QLD IS PREPARED TO GO IT ALONE on the R18 classification, they're already in the process of doing it, NSW's AG (ACT has said he'll be willing but wont do it yet) has said he's quite prepared to push this through NSW's parliament if Atkinson blocks it again.

As for R18 hiding the censorship thing... erm, no. They'd been sitting on the filter paper for months, they released it the same day that the talks broke down and the africans stormed out of Coppenhagen. R18 is a "meh" on the public radar normally (as much as we hate to admit it), but Coppenhagen had something distracting enough to most of the public to let him push the filter out.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

I'm sorry, but I thought Atkinson WAS the sole person blocking the R18+ rating.

I once had a dream about God. In it, he was looking down upon the planet and the havoc we recked and he said unto us, "Damn Kids get off my lawn!"

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

He is, that's the point I'm making. The columnist doesnt seem to be aware that the other AGs have been approached on the issue and responded that they support it.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

Question, do you know exactly how many other AGs there are? Just curious.

Re: Columnist: R18+ Paper Meant to Distract from Web ...

If he was running policy that went against the beliefs of the Government, he wouldn’t continue to hold his position of Attorney General.

This just means someone has to talk to him & say something against the Government to get him out of office. :)
