Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 raked in more than $550 million in its first week of sales, making it the most popular entertainment launch in history. That popularity has also shown up in the number of unauthorized downloads, topping the charts as the most pirated game of 2009.
According to numbers posted at TorrentFreak, as of November, the PC version of MW2 had been downloaded from BitTorrent more than 4.1 million times, with the Xbox 360 version being downloaded another 970,000 times. Those numbers far exceed Spore on the PC and Street Fighter IV on the 360, both coming in second.
According to the article:
The overall trend across all platforms is that, unlike last year, all of the games are 2009 releases. What makes Modern Warfare 2’s chart-topping even more impressive is that this has been achieved after just two months of availability. We further see that the figures for the most downloaded titles have more than doubled compared to last year, equaling the growth in uTorrent users.
The top Wii game to be downloaded was New Super Mario Bros. with 1.15 million downloads.

And what does this prove?
No matter what kind of DRM you put in a game, it WILL be cracked.

Actually I think it proves that no matter how much the PC crowd complains about the crap that developers do to the platform, they still want to play the game even though they won't support the developer to do so.
Kind of sad if you really think about it.

I'm a life long PC gamer and buy all the games I like and just don't play the ones that suck (i.e. the half-assed overpriced version of MW2.) Thanks for the generalisation that calls us all theives though.

Perhaps they feel that the game isn't worth $60, but they still want to play it?

It shows that the suckiest over rated games still get pirated as much as anything else thats popular....

So everyone that downlaods is a consumer that would buy it anyway? .....rrriiiggghhhhttttttt.....

"Actually I think it proves that no matter how much the PC crowd complains about the crap that developers do to the platform, they still want to play the game even though they won't support the developer to do so."
This sentence assumes that its about "downlaoders " and also assumes that each of them is a normal consumer who if giving more of a chance would support IE buy.
Really what else would there be to read from the sentence?

I truly find MW2 to be one of the best games of the past couple years. Multiplayer is better than COD4, single player was...a swing and a foul (instead of a swing and a miss), single player was good but didn't match up to COD4's. And Spec Ops is damn fun.
I...don't really see how it's over-rated, let alone the "suckiest" over-rated game.

What does it prove? Think about it - it's hugely hyped, so people want to see what all the fuss is about. There's also an undercurrent of a lot of folks saying that it's garbage. It's like a perfect storm for piracy. Lots of folks want to play with it, but those in the know fear that it's crap and don't want to pay good money for crap. Of course it's going to be the most pirated game.
Need dedicated servers btw (hopefully some ignominous pirate have made some that work better than this shitty matchmaking crap...)
Is it really surprising that that all time best selling game (with respect to how long it’s been released) is the most pirated game ever? Like said, it sold $550 million in its first week with the biggest launch in history and the company still complains that their losing money. I call bullshit on that one. The fact that it sold so well is that they had a good license (referring to the Call of Duty franchise), with a reputation of developing good games. While not everyone like it, most did because it was a good. Goes to show you what happens when you take time to craft a good game and not shit in a box with a $60 dollar price tag on it like so many others do.
It’s that most popular game ever so getting a pirated copy is easier because so many want it (supply and demand). Those in the scene are working hard to enable people to play online and single player because the demand is high. YET, and I’ll say it again, IT SOLD BETTER THAN ANY OTHER GAME SO FAR despite this fact.
You want to stop piracy? You treat games the same as any other product. You buy a shit, buggy, quickly developed game just to make a quick buck, than I should be able to take your broken game back to get ALL my money! Same thing if I bought a power tool that you say can do this, that, and the other and I find out that you lied, you better give back my money. Don’t give me crap on renting games , you can’t do that with PC anyway. Don’t start talking about demos that only show the best for about 10 minutes. If they stop false advertising and hyping products that don’t deliver on the promises you’ll get more games like Modern Warfare 2. People will pay for them too.
The trouble is all media returns vanished in the late 90s so having a return for anything poo'd out by the industry to make a quick buck even these days forget it.
Also piracy(at least the non illegal parts ) is a natural part of popularity IE you wont be getting rid of it you however can marginalize it by not wanking and pissing on the consumer....

I had a feeling that the game would get Spored after the announcement that the PC version is nothing more than a port with no servers and mods as well as the low blow that the only features that the PC version of the game has over the console versions are either things that come in common with PC games (Mouse and Keyboard support and the ability to change the graphical quality) or something that is very useless to PC gamers (Text chat as using it kills your controls)
When I say a game gets Spored, I mean the game gets low user ratings on Amazon and Metacritic as well as being the most pirated game of the year or month, like what happened with Spore.
To mnay drooling shooter fans to let any trendy title not get the highest rantigns possable!!

It's not that Zippy. Spore kept on getting 1 star on Amazon because of the DRM. CODMW2 got 1 star on Amazon or 0 or 1's on Metacritic because of the lack of Dedicated servers.

I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.
I didnt buy the first one full price (got it for £29.99) Im not going to buy this one full price either Ill wait while it drops atleast to £30 preferably £25
That's my plan. If I play it, I won't be buying it for another year or two until it's gone way down in price or until I can get it used during a buy two get one free deal at Gamestop.
Don't ask & don't tell about people downloading this game. The gamers still win to the end for this game.......the media can go jump off a cliff.

Good. They deserve nothing less for their pathetic treatment of the PC. I regret purchasing the game and will certainly not do it again. I've not intentions of pirating either, I pay for my games, but not a shred of sympathy flows through me.
May MW3 be pirated 3 times as much. (unless they fix their pathetic mistakes and fire the CEO who chose to insult me.)
heh, makes me want it less. ANd it does make the "billions in lost revenue" argument for DRM seem even more hollow.
