Argument Over FIFA PS3 Tactics Leads to Stabbing

Following an argument over the best strategies to utilize in FIFA 2009, an Italian teenager stabbed his father in the neck with a 15-inch knife.
16-year old Mario (no last name given) cut his 46-year old father Fabrizio in the family home after the discussion over tactics resulted in the patriarch shutting off the television. Mario then retrieved a clean knife from the kitchen, stabbed his father, and returned to the kitchen to clean the knife in front of his mother reports Reuters.
The mother didn’t know anything was amiss until Fabrizio, who survived the attack staggered into the kitchen bleeding.
FIFA 2009 was given to the boy as a birthday present just a few days earlier. His mother said, “…we bought him FIFA 2009 because we didn’t want him playing violent games.”
As noted by submitter Allen (thanks!), it isn’t about if the games are violent or not, it’s about the person playing them.

I heard soccer fans can get violent ,but damn.
The kid had no outlet for his natural adolescent rage-inducing hormones. With no access to violent games which might have let him get out his frustration, his option was to resort to violence in real life. With more and more parents preventing kids from finding a safe outlet for stress in violent games, I fear we're going to see more of this sort of thing.
I've often wondered, on seeing "violent games increase aggression" studies, why they haven't controlled for nonviolent competitive games. I think I've had more animated fights over Worms than any other game in my adult life. (Needless to say, no violence has ever actually erupted.)
A real tragedy, and it's a relief to hear that the father survived. Hopefully the boy will get the counseling and medication he clearly needs. That's the real takeaway from stories like this -- it's easy to say something simple like "blame the games" or "blame the parents", but mental health is a much more complex subject than that.
When i was young, i had a NES system, and just 1 cart, the Mario/Duck hunt game.
After months of me playing, i convinced my mother to take a stab at duck hunt. She set herself up, and then continued to miss, over and over, because i was controlling the duck via the controller in the 2nd player port.
When she found out what i was doing, my mother, a very gentle, non violent woman, threw down the controller, swore at me (10 years old), and ran out of the room.
I've mentioned a number of times the observational approach to showing how the complexity of individuality can show that it isn't the stimuli that the individual is exposed to but the lifetime experiences, small and large, as well as genetic and current emotional factors, among other things, which leads individuals to take a particular action.
Yet there are still many with agendas who try to claim that it is the stimuli itself which causes the aggression.
If anything, in this particular case, it was not the stimuli of a video game but the stimuli of how the teen AND the father reacts to a debate, which turned into a heated debate, which then escalated even farther. It was how these individuals learned from various events throughout their lives, as well as genetic traits of patience, willpower, even the potential for anger, even violence, as well as the conditions of the moment, among other things, which led to the stabbing.
They each played off each other's individuality, and that led to the final resolution. It doesn't take an expert to recognize this at all.

i'm killing someone next week, and plan to use the video game defense, don't mess it up for me man. I need some plausible history to this defense!
BTW, for anyone who plays the Steve Jackson Games game called Munchkin, take note of this story before you adhere to the rules of Munchkin. A loud argument ensued and the owner of the cards... er... TV... THOUGHT he had the final say.
Next time you play Munchkins, don't play near a kitchen.
Or, better yet, far away from sharp objects. :)

It didn't escalate to our Soul Caliber level of abuse, but it still got pretty nasty.

The only thing this proves is how some people are seriously F'ed up, stabbing your own father over not just a game, but strategy to the game? that's just wrong.
I mean, i know I personally get a little annoyed and moody when my friend (a total gaming noob in this case) doesn't take my advice (taken from 12 years of experience out of 19 total years on this planet, so i kinda know what i'm talking about with most games) as law, does something i didn't tell her to do, and then bitches at me that i didn't explain well enough.
But i don't go grab a knife and attack her. and i don't even consider myself normal, so i can only imagine how messed up this guy is.
Quite honestly, I'm surprised no one made a Super Mario Bros. reference yet.
In any case, Mario could end up being a stapler for the Stop Having Fun Guys and the Scrubs all over the world. Someone doesn't like how you play? Stab 'em.
*sigh* This is gonna be trouble. Let's hope this doesn't reach Keith.

Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.
This also makes me think back to a few years ago when a fight/riot broke out at a soccer game and made the news. Shortly afterwards, a certain someone posted they had written a letter to someone, a politician I think, that they were (faked) sympathetic over the riot and that it was caused by violent video games having made the rioters more aggressive and violent.
Somehow, this too seems like irony.
